DULUTH, Minn. – The Northwestern College baseball team faced quite the challenge on Thursday, playing a tripleheader against the fourth-best team in NCAA Division III in the College of St. Scholastica. The Saints from St. Scholastica prevailed in their home field of Wade Stadium, winning 6-3, 10-5 and 10-1.

NWC matched St. Scholastica run-for-run in the first game in all but one inning. Unfortunately, that one inning produced four runs for the host Saints, as back-to-back two-out hits produced game-changing scores.   Down 5-0, the Eagles scored two runs in the fourth inning, as Zach Holsman (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) scored Erik Dahl (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) on a sacrifice fly before Mark Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) (St. Anthony, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) scored on a passed ball.

St. Scholastica continued to rely on the big innings in Game 2, as a five-run third frame and a four-run fourth throttled the Saints to a 10-5 win. After scoring single runs in the second and fifth inning, the Eagles added three runs in the seventh inning. After Kevin Kleiner (Lakeville, Minn./Bethany Academy) (Lakeville, Minn./Bethany Academy) walked, Dahl hit his 10th home run of the season over the right field fence. Kurt Votaw (Coon Rapids, Minn./Hinckley Finlayson) (Coon Rapids, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson) followed with an infield single to score Kyle Mick (Maplewood, Minn./Concordia Academy) (Maplewood, Minn./Concordia Academy).

Game 3 didn't get any better for NWC, as St. Scholastica's top pitcher in Peter Burg shut down the Eagles, limiting the visitors to just one run and three hits. Northwestern scored its lone run of the game in the third inning, when Mike Sharp (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) scored on a Ryan Long (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) groundout after doubling to right center to lead off the inning.

St. Scholastica put up four runs in the second inning, one run in the fourth and five more in the sixth to win their 20th game in a row while bumping their season record to 29-2 (17-0 UMAC).

Ryan Nelson (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) pitched Game 1 for Northwestern, yielding four earned runs on eight hits while striking out four. Josh Englund (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) and Scott Swanson (Maple Grove, Minn./West Lutheran) (Maple Grove, Minn./West Lutheran) tackled the second game, striking out three together while allowing eight hits. Mark Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) started Game 3 from the hill, giving up four earned runs over five innings before Andy Borud (Grand Marais, Minn./Cook County) pitched the sixth inning, yielding three runs on three hits.

Offensively, Northwestern struggled at the plate, as only three guys had more than two hits throughout the entire three games. Dan Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) and Dahl each had four hits on the day, while Nelson added three.

The Eagles slide to 14-19 overall and 9-9 in UMAC play following the losses, and will need to be successful in their three-game series with the University of Minnesota, Morris next weekend to maintain third place in the conference standings. Next up for NWC will be a nonconference game versus North Central University on Tuesday, April 28. Tuesday's first pitch in Minneapolis is slated for 6 p.m.
