Eagles go 0-2 in split doubleheader

ST. PAUL – Despite hosting a split doubleheader with four UMAC teams on Tuesday at Reynolds Field, the host team didn't fare so well, as Northwestern College lost both of its games. Northland College defeated the Eagles 8-3 before NWC was no-hit by the College of St. Scholastica in an 8-0 final.

After Northland scored a run in the first inning of Game 1, Northwestern answered in the top of the second inning when Amanda Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) hit a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1. The Lumberjills, who were the home team on the scoreboard having played at Reynolds Field twice already this year, came back with a six-run third inning that included four hits and four Northwestern errors.

While RBI hits by Jenny Kortus (Milaca, Minn./Milaca) (Milaca, Minn./Milaca) and Jenna Ruby (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie) (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie) gave the Eagles two more runs in the fourth inning, Northland scored another run in the fifth before closing out the game with an 8-3 win.

Jessie Lokken (Goodland, Minn./Nashwauk-Keewatin) was the only Northwestern player to record more than one hit in the game, as the sophomore went 2-3. Kelsey Hanson (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis) (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis) pitched all six innings for the Eagles, striking out three while taking on four earned runs.

Unfortunately, Game 2 wasn't any better for NWC, as pitcher Jenn Falk and the rest of St. Scholastica shut down the home team. A three-run first inning by the Saints was more than enough for Falk, who struck out all but one of the batters she faced to finish with 14 strikeouts.

St. Scholastica scored one run in the second inning and four runs in the fourth, making the final 8-0 score.

Ashley Olson (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) went all five innings for the Eagles in the pitcher's circle, giving up five earned runs on six hits.

Northwestern falls to 12-20 overall (8-7 UMAC) on the year, and will need to perform well at this weekend's UMAC crossover tournament to solidify its spot amongst the league's top four teams that make the conference tournament. NWC will play four games between Friday and Saturday, beginning with the University of Minnesota, Morris at 2 p.m. on Friday. All games are in Aberdeen, S.D.
