Game 2 Box Score

WACONIA, Minn. – After being swept by Bethany Lutheran College over the weekend, the Northwestern College baseball team regained its footing on Tuesday with a pair of wins over Crown College in UMAC action. NWC dominated the host-Storm, outscoring their opponents 42-4 between the two games.

Erik Dahl (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) was the highlight of Game 1, as he hit a solo home run to start the fifth inning. Dahl's bomb was his ninth of the season, breaking Craig Scheithauer's former Northwestern record of eight home runs that was set in 1998.

Dan Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) and Ryan Nelson (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) also had home runs in the game, both of which came in the eight-run third inning for Northwestern. In all, NWC posted 23 hits in the game, scoring four or more runs in four different frames to win 22-3.

Andrew Stokes (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) went four and one-third innings to start the game on the pitcher's mound, striking out three while allowing six hits. Scott Swanson (Maple Grove, Minn./West Lutheran) (Maple Grove, Minn./West Lutheran) allowed one hit in his two and two-thirds innings pitched.

Game 2 was much of the same story without the home runs, as Northwestern scattered 19 hits for 20 runs. The Eagles once again put up eight runs in the second inning, as Halstensgard, Dahl and Zach Holsman (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) each hit RBI doubles that produced at least two runs apiece.

After a five-run third frame, Northwestern calmed down for an inning before resuming the hitting spree, as the Eagles combined for seven runs over the fifth and sixth innings to make up for the 20-1 score.

Mark Meredith (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) (Golden Valley, Minn./Armstrong) went the distance in the matinee, striking out nine in a seven-inning complete game. Meredith leads Northwestern's pitching staff with a 2.35 ERA.

For the day, several Eagles improved their batting averages, including Halstensgard, who tallied seven hits. Holsman and Mike Sharp (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) each went 5-7 at the plate, while Dahl and Mark Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) (St. Anthony, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) also collected four hits apiece.

Northwestern, who improves to 14-15 (9-6 UMAC) in 2009, will be back at Reynolds Field on Wednesday, April 22 for a nonconference game against Hamline University before heading north to Duluth, Minn. to take on UMAC foe-College of St. Scholastica for an important three-game series on Friday and Saturday. Wednesday's first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
