MANKATO, Minn. – The Northwestern College softball team wrapped up its four-game weekend with a doubleheader at Bethany Lutheran College. The Eagles split the twin bill with the Vikings, losing 6-5 in extra innings before winning 9-5.

Northwestern scored four runs over the first and second innings to own a 4-1 lead. Lauren August (Maple Plain, Minn./West Lutheran) (Maple Plain, Minn./West Lutheran) highlighted the second inning with a two-RBI single up the middle that scored Ashley Weimer (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) and Jessie Lokken (Goodland, Minn./Nashwauk-Keewatin).

After Bethany made the score 4-2 with a solo run in the third inning, the Eagles added a run in the fourth. Alyssa Borgstrom (Amery, Wis./Amery) (Amery, Wis./Amery) tripled to left center before scoring on Weimer's ensuing groundout.

The Vikings made a comeback in the seventh inning, scoring three runs on three hits to go with two errors in the frame to tie the game. After Northwestern went three up, three down in the top of the eighth inning, Bethany scored on a unearned run to win 6-5.

Game 2 was slightly different for the Eagles, as they used four- and five-run innings to win 9-5. Three singles in the third inning scored three runs, as August, Amanda Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) and Kristie Bicket (Zion, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) (Zion, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) each recorded RBIs.

Down 5-4 going into the seventh frame, NWC produced five runs on four hits and an error to claim the lead and the eventual win. Jenna Ruby (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie) (Long Prairie, Minn./Long Prairie) hit a key double to right center to give the Eagles some momentum before scoring on a single by Cindy Frisch (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredericksburg) (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredricksburg). August followed shortly thereafter with her fourth RBI of the day on a single, scoring Borgstrom.

Rodgers pitched Game 1 for Northwestern, giving up four earned runs on 11 hits. Kelsey Hanson (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis) (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis) got the nod to start Game 2, striking out two while yielding three runs. Ashley Olson (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) came in with one out in the seventh inning, shutting down the two batters she faced to earn the save.

August finished 5-8 at the plate between the two games, while Ruby added four hits to Northwestern's offense. Rodgers and Weimer also recorded two-hit games.

Northwestern's record moves to 12-18 overall (8-5 UMAC) with the win, while Bethany stands at 7-23 (6-10 UMAC). The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday, April 21 when they host single games against Northland College and the College of St. Scholastica. Tuesday's first pitch begins at 11 a.m. on Reynolds Field.
