Dahl's seven-RBI day leads Eagles to sweep of North Central

ST. PAUL – The Northwestern College baseball team recorded its highest amount of runs in a game on Thursday afternoon, besting North Central University 10-1. The Eagles followed that with a 13-2 win to sweep the Rams at Reynolds Field.

Erik Dahl (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) led a trio of Northwestern players that hit home runs in the game. Dahl put two shots over the fence, while teammates Kyle Mick (Maplewood, Minn./Concordia Academy) (Maplewood, Minn./Concordia Academy) and Ryan Nelson (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) also hit bombs.

After a two-run first inning, Northwestern added four more runs in the fourth frame. A Dahl leadoff home run started the Eagles' scoring spree, followed by RBI hits from Mike Sharp (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and Tyler Sage (Duncanville, Texas/Ovilla Christian) (Duncanville, Texas/Olivia Christian).

NWC followed with a three-run fifth frame that featured Nelson and Mick's home runs. The Eagles and Rams each added a run in the sixth and seventh innings to wrap up the 10-1 final.

Dahl, Sharp and Dan Halstesngard (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) went 2-3 at the plate, while Dahl recorded three RBI. Mark Meredith (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) (Golden Valley, Minn./Armstrong) got the nod to start the game from the on the hill. Meredith worked the entire game, giving up five hits and one run while striking out seven.

Game 2 was much of the same story, as Northwestern posted 13 hits en route to a 13-2 win. The Eagles had back-to-back four-run innings to start the game. Dahl one-upped himself from the first game, hitting a grand slam to increase his season's RBI total to 14.

After a scoreless third frame, the Eagles posted a five-run fourth inning when Halstensgard, Tyler Marcio (Bethel, Minn./St. Francis) (Bethel, Minn./St. Francis), Mick and Mike Strickland (Plymouth, Minn./Armstrong) (Plymouth, Minn./Armstrong) all recorded RBIs.

North Central, who scored a run in the first inning, added their second run of the game in the sixth inning before NWC closed out the game with a one-two-three seventh.

Ryan Long (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) had a 2-4 performance at the plate that included three runs scored. Dan Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) joined Dahl in the three-or-more RBI club, tallying three on a 1-2 performance at the plate to go with two runs scored. Between the two games, Dahl amassed seven RBI while going 3-5 on the day.

Scott Swanson (Maple Grove, Minn./West Lutheran) (Maple Grove, Minn./West Lutheran) pitched six innings from the mound, yielding one earned run from the 24 batters he faced. Paul Foster (Andover, Minn./St. Francis) (Andover, Minn./St. Francis) pitched the final inning, striking out one of the three batters he faced.

Northwestern, now 3-10 on the season, will open a weekend series with Northland College on Friday. The two teams will play an afternoon doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. on Friday, followed by a single nine-inning game at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
