Baseball falls to Bethany Lutheran, maintains third place in UMAC standings

Box Score

ST. PAUL – Northwestern College wrapped up a weekend three-game series with Bethany Lutheran College on Saturday, falling 11-7 in a nine-inning affair.  The Vikings out-hit the Eagles 16-9 while NWC committed five errors in the game.

Bethany scored one and two runs in the first and second innings before adding a fourth run in the fourth frame.  After posting five hits already in the game, the Vikings scored two more runs in the fifth inning on a hit and an error.

Northwestern finally got on the board with a four-run sixth inning.  Dan Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) capped off three straight singles with an RBI hit to right field, scoring Tyler Sage (Duncanville, Texas/Ovilla Christian) (Duncanville, Texas/Olivia Christian).  Kyle Mick (Maplewood, Minn./Concordia Academy) (Maplewood, Minn./Concordia Academy) added another RBI single before Mike Strickland (Plymouth, Minn./Armstrong) (Plymouth, Minn./Armstrong) lined an RBI single, scoring Mick and Halstensgard.

Bethany answered with two runs in the seventh inning from two hits and another NWC error.  The Eagles matched the Vikings' runs in the bottom half of the frame, as Ryan Nelson (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) and Erik Dahl (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) both hit sacrifice flies.  Northwestern's scoring came to a halt after that though, and Bethany Lutheran scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning to pad their eventual 13-6 win.

Mark Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) (St. Anthony, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) turned in seven strong innings for the Eagles, yielding five earned runs while striking out four.  Andy Borud (Grand Marais, Minn./Cook County) (Grand Marais, Minn./Cook County), Mark Meredith (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) (Golden Valley, Minn./Armstrong) and Andrew Stokes (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) finished out the final two innings.  Stokes, who entered the game with one out in the ninth, struck out the only two batters he faced.

Offensively, Dan Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) went 3-5 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored.  Ryan Long (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) and Strickland each recorded two hits as well.

Northwestern, who slides to 12-15 (7-6 UMAC) with the loss, will play its final home game of the season on Wednesday, April 22 versus Hamline University before traveling to Duluth, Minn. to take on the College of St. Scholastica next weekend.  Wednesday's first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Reynolds Field.
