Eagles struggle to find rhythm against Bethany Lutheran

Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

ST. PAUL – The Northwestern College baseball team struggled against UMAC foe Bethany Lutheran College on Friday afternoon after taking two of its three nonconference affairs earlier in the week. Northwestern struggled to get anything going in either game of the doubleheader, losing 23-2 and 10-3.

Not much went the Eagles' way in Game 1, as it took six pitchers for Northwestern to complete seven innings.  While the home team was outscored 23-2, the more difficult part to chew on was that Bethany scored its runs on 16 hits. Northwestern's Kyle Mick (Maplewood, Minn./Concordia Academy) (Maplewood, Minn./Concordia Academy) hit his seventh home run of the year in the second inning. The other Eagles' run was courtesy of a Ryan Long (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) single in the fourth frame that scored Zach Holsman (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) (Hill City, Minn./Hill City).

What went wrong for the pitchers in the first game seemed to carry over to the offense in the second game, as the Eagles left 10 men on base in the loss. Bethany Lutheran used a six-run third inning to propel themselves to a 10-run game, courtesy of a three-run home run by Travis Fisher.

Northwestern put single runs on the board in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Ryan Nelson (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran), Tyler Sage (Duncanville, Texas/Ovilla Christian) (Duncanville, Texas/Olivia Christian) and Erik Dahl (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) all recorded an RBI singles.

Nelson started Game 2 from the pitcher's mound, yielding seven runs on eight hits over four innings. Andrew Stokes (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) finished the final three frames, yielding a single run.

Northwestern, now 12-14 on the season, will try to salvage the third and final game of the weekend series with Bethany Lutheran on Saturday, April 18. The first pitch of the nine-inning game is scheduled for 12 p.m.
