NEW ULM, Minn. – The Northwestern College baseball team won both of its games on Saturday over Martin Luther to claim the three-game series 2-1. The Eagles claimed 4-3 and 6-2 wins behind strong starting pitching.

Josh Englund (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) earned his third victory of the year, going four and one-third innings while yielding just four hits in Game 1. While Englund was busy getting batters out, his teammates on offense were building up 10 hits that turned into four runs. Down 2-0, Northwestern put up two runs in both the third and fifth innings. Dan Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) hit a two-out double to left field, scoring Mike Sharp (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) to begin the Eagles' scoring. Ryan Nelson (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) followed with an RBI single, scoring Halstesngard.

Nelson continued to throttle NWC's bats in the fifth, hitting an RBI triple to right-center. Two batters later, Mark Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) (St. Anthony, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) singled to center to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead. Following his successful at-bat, the younger Halstensgard took to the hill to pitch scoreless sixth and seventh innings to record the save after recording the game's final out on a pickoff at second base.

In Game 2, Northwestern remained hot in its at-bats, scoring three runs in the first inning as Erik Dahl (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) and Mike Strickland (Plymouth, Minn./Armstrong) (Plymouth, Minn./Armstrong) each hit RBI singles. The Eagles put more runs on the board in the fifth, as Dahl scored on a Zach Holsman (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) double to left field. Holsman then scored on a single by Sharp before an infield pop-up ended the inning.

After posting its sixth run of the game in the sixth inning, Northwestern cruised to a 6-2 victory with Mark Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) on the mound. The freshman gave up two earned runs while striking out three batters to earn his first win of 2009.

For the day, Nelson and Dahl each tallied four hits, while both Halstensgards, Holsman and Sharp each posted two-hit games.

Northwestern, now 10-11 overall and 7-3 in UMAC play, will play two non-conference affairs at Bethel and Macalester before hosting UMAC opponent Bethany Lutheran for a three-game series next weekend. Tuesday's twin bill at Bethel is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
