Martin Luther halts Baseball's seven-game win streak

Box Score

NEW ULM, Minn. – The Northwestern College baseball team had its seven-game winning streak snapped by Martin Luther College on Friday, as the Knights won the first game of a three-game series 6-5. The Eagles, who were down 6-3 headed into the top of the ninth inning, scored two runs with two outs in the frame, but the magic ended with a fly out to center field.

Martin Luther started the game's scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Northwestern answered with single runs in the second and third frames, courtesy of RBI hits from Zach Holsman (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) and Erik Dahl (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong) (Robbinsdale, Minn./Armstrong). The Knights were churning out runs at the same time, scoring at least one run in each of the first four innings to lead 5-2.

Tyler Sage (Duncanville, Texas/Ovilla Christian) (Duncanville, Texas/Olivia Christian) scored on a wild pitch in the seventh inning after initially reaching base on a bunt single. Martin Luther answered back with a run in the bottom of the eighth, giving themselves some insurance before Northwestern charged forth in the top of the ninth, coming up a run short to lose 6-5.

Ryan Nelson (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) (Stillwater, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran) started the game for Northwestern, pitching seven and two-thirds innings before giving way to Paul Foster (Andover, Minn./St. Francis) (Andover, Minn./St. Francis). Three of Nelson's six runs were earned, as the Eagles committed three errors. Foster's one batter flied out to end the eighth inning.

Offensively, Dahl finished 3-5 at the plate while Nelson was 2-5. Dahl upped his season's RBI total to 26 with two in the game.

Northwestern falls to 8-11 (5-3 UMAC) with the loss, while Martin Luther improves to 4-14 (4-4 UMAC). The two teams will be back on the diamond in New Ulm on Saturday for a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
