ROSEMOUNT, Minn. – Northwestern College went indoors for its game against the University of St. Thomas on Wednesday. Unfortunately, the change of scenery didn't help the Eagles, as they fell to the Tommies 13-0 and 17-6.
Game 1 went by fast for Northwestern's offense, who struggled to put a hit on the board until the fourth inning. St. Thomas, who entered this week as the No. 4 team in all of NCAA Division III, was a different story, as the Tommies used a five-run first inning to throttle themselves to runs in each of the five innings.
Jenny Kortus (Milaca, Minn./Milaca) (Milaca, Minn./Milaca) recorded the Eagles' lone hit in the game.
Game 2 showed more offense by both teams, as NWC was able to put runs on the board while the Tommies outdid their initial offensive performance. Kortus continued to excel, going 2-3 with two RBI in the game to lead the Eagles, who scored four of their six runs in the fifth inning.
Kelsey Hanson (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis) (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis) started the game for Northwestern from the pitcher's circle, giving up six earned runs while striking out one in six innings.
Northwestern, now 3-13 on the season, will resume its schedule on April 7, when the Eagles host Northland College in a 3 p.m. doubleheader. Saturday's doubleheader versus the College of St. Scholastica has been postponed due to unplayable field conditions in Duluth, Minn.
