Marywood makes it two straight over NWC

By Kristie Bicket (Zion, Ill./Zion-Benton Township)

FORT PIERCE, Fla.—In their second contest against Marywood University in as many days , the Northwestern softball team arrived at the field determined to raise their level of play, which was seen in the head to head battle ending with a score of 2-1 in favor of the Pacers.

With Marywood leading 1-0 in the second inning, the Eagles' bats came alive with three solid hits.  A crucial grounder by freshman Leighanna Nyquist (Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) brought in the lone run of the game for the Eagles.

NWC's defense held strong as the teams were tied 1-1 through the fifth inning. After walking two runners, a hit to center field gave the Pacers one more run, which was all they needed as Northwestern was unable to come back in the final two innings.

Even though the Eagles left 10 runners on base throughout the evening, hitting improved as Jenny Kortus (Milaca, Minn./Milaca) (Milaca, Minn./Milaca), Amanda Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) (Monticello, Minn./Monticello), and Lauren August (Maple Plain, Minn./West Lutheran) (Maple Plain, Minn./West Lutheran) went 2-4.

Fighting to the end, Rodgers only gave up one earned run for the night from the pitcher's circle.
