Eagles fall to Marywood in first Florida game

By Kristie Bicket (Zion, Ill./Zion-Benton Township)

FORT PIERCE, Fla.— On its annual Florida trip, the Northwestern softball team took its first steps on a dirt field, which resulted in a 7-16 loss to Marywood University.

Neither team wasted any time as the Pacers started the top of the first inning with three runs. The Eagles answered back with a hit by Jenny Kortus (Milaca, Minn./Milaca) that brought in a run for NWC.

By the bottom of the third inning, Marywood held a 9-1 advantage over Northwestern. With two runners on base, a hit by Amanda Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) brought in two runs followed by a sacrifice fly from Kelsey Hanson (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis) that scored Rodgers, giving the Eagles four runs total as they headed into the fourth inning.

Northwestern held strong in the fifth, not giving the Pacers a chance to bring in any runs. At bat in the sixth with bases loaded, an error by Marywood's shortstop gave the Eagles two more runs. Add to that to another Rodgers hit to right field meant another score and the junior's third RBI of the evening, as she finished the game 2-3 at the plate.

Although both teams had three errors a piece in the game, the Eagles' total of seven runners left on base and only having five hits in the game couldn't compete with the Pacers' 15 hits.
