Eagles go 0-2 in Florida debut

By Kristie Bicket

FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- The Northwestern baseball team stepped onto a grass field for the first time this season, going up against Alvernia University.  The Eagles didn't fare well in their first outdoor appearance, losing 22-2.

After two and a half innings neither team had scored a run.  That soon changed though, as Alvernia scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning before adding seven more in the fifth inning.  The lone runs scored for NWC was courtesy of Kyle Mick (Maplewood, Minn./Concordia Academy)'s (Maplewood, Minn./Concordia Academy) two-RBI double.

Pitching the first three innings was Andrew Stokes (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy), who gave up five earned runs before Eagles' Head Coach Dave Hieb tried a new pitcher each inning through the end of the game.

Northwestern's second game of the day looked a little different, as the Eagles went head-to-head against Marywood University, resulting in an 11-7 loss.

Starting strong in the first frame, a hit by Mick allowed Ryan Long (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) to score on a fielder's choice while a Pacers error gave the Eagles its second run. A bunt by Tyler Sage (Duncanville, Texas/Ovilla Christian) (Duncanville, Tex./Olivia Christian) and a sacrifice RBI by Long scored two more runs for NWC in the second inning.

NWC went into the fourth inning leading 5-0 before the game turned in favor of the Pacers, as Marywood rallied for back-to-back four-run innings in the fifth and sixth.

Mark Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) (St. Anthony, Minn./Minnehaha Academy), who pitched four and a two-thirds innings, took responsibility for five of the seven earned runs given up by NWC. Leading the team at the plate was Dan Halstensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) and Zach Holsman (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) (Hill City, Minn./Hill City), as both finished 2-4.
