Northwestern women fall to Northland

ST. PAUL -- The Northwestern College women's basketball team fell short against the Northland College Lumberjills by a score of 56-47, after trailing 23-21 at half.  The game began as a defensive battle, as neither team scored a point until the 16 minute mark.  Yet Northland quickly gained control after this point, going on a 14-2 run after 12 minutes of play.  NWC clawed their way back into the competition by depleting the deficit to two points at the half.

After the half the Eagles kept within eyesight of the lead, but the Lumberjills strung together a 12-0 scoring run at the 7:30 mark, which boosted their lead to 45-30.  NWC chipped away at the Northland lead, putting on their own 12-0 run within 3 minutes, making the score 45-42.  However, Northland would secure the victory with flawless free throw shooting and timely defense with a final score of 56-47.

On the night, the Eagles shot 31 percent from the field, but struggled behind the 3-point line, making 3 of 22 shots on the night.  This proved to be a key factor, as NWC would not be able to sink one from outside range until the 6-minute mark.  Although the Eagles were unable to win the points total, they did capitalize on the boards, owning a 38-29 advantage.

Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) was the leader of the Eagle squad, posting 16 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.  Megan Myhre (Barnum, Minn./Barnum) (Barnum, Minn./Barnum) played a vital role as well, posting a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The Lumberjills were paced by Chelsea Lundgren, who tallied 13 points and grabbed eight boards.  She was aided by Lindsey Hamm and Melissa Waytashek, who each added nine points.

Northwestern will be in action again on Tuesday, Dec. 9 where they will travel to Superior, Wisconsin to take on the University of Wisconsin-Superior.  Tip-off for this game will begin at 5 p.m.
