No. 20 UW-River Falls hands NWC 49-37 loss

Box Score

RIVER FALLS, Wis. -- In a bizarre and physical game that featured a combined 21 points between the two teams at halftime, Wisconsin-River Falls defeated Northwestern College 49-37 to remain unbeaten at 9-0 this season. The 20th-ranked Falcons (D3Hoops.com) tallied 21 offensive rebounds and scored 31 points off of the Eagles' mistakes to win the game.

Despite making only four of its 42 attempts in the first half, River Falls led 12-9 after 20 minutes of play. Northwestern was only able to counter with four successful shots of its own, but turnovers hampered the Eagles early and often throughout the game.

Both teams turned on the burners in the second half. Northwestern scored better than three times its first half performance as did the host-Falcons in the final period. While the Eagles posted better overall shooting numbers throughout the game at 33 percent, NWC committed 29 turnovers in the game, allowing River Falls to win by 12 points.

Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) and Kaelee Kendrick (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) each recorded double-doubles with 11 points and 11 rebounds. DeWitt, who had been named the NCCAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week earlier in the day, struggled after averaging 28.5 points per game last week. Kendrick, who surpassed Northwestern's all-time blocks record in last Saturday's loss to Augsburg, made five of her eight shots while grabbing five offensive rebounds.

Alise Holst had 17 points for the Falcons, while Maranda Dohrn paced River Falls with 10 boards.

Following the loss, Northwestern moves to 5-5 overall. The Eagles will return home for one final game in 2009, as Northwestern hosts Bethel University in the Ericksen Center at 1 p.m. on Dec. 31.
