Eagles sweep Hamline 3-0

Box Score

ST. PAUL -- The Northwestern College volleyball team won its sixth consecutive match on Wednesday evening, handing a 3-0 loss to fellow Snelling Avenue foe Hamline University. While the Eagles dominated Sets Nos. 1 and 2 with 25-18 scores, Hamline pressured NWC in the third set before the home team pulled out a 28-26 win to take the match.

Greta King (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) and Chelsea Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) each had 12 kills for Northwestern, as the Eagles posted 45 kills as a team, compared to 35 for Hamline. King's personal attacking percentage of .400 certainly helped Northwestern's team attack, as the Eagles finished with a .238 hitting percentage.

King helped answer some questions as to where the team would turn after losing 2008 UMAC Player of the Year Steph Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) to injury. Danielle Rhodes (Iowa City, Iowa/City) (Iowa City, Iowa/City), Northwestern's starting libero in 2009, moved up to the front row to take Koth's spot on the left side. The junior did rather well in her first game as an outside hitter, recording six kills on 20 attempts with just one error.

Hillary Slagter (Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) (Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) and Leah Kostek (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian ) (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) combined for 38 assists, while the trio of Natalie Carroll (Pleasant Hill, Iowa/Southeast Polk) (Pleasant Hill, Iowa/Southeast Polk), Kelsey Korporal (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredericksburg) (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredricksburg) and Rhodes tallied 12, 11 and 10 digs, respectively. Despite Tasha Simmons leading all players with 17 kills, the Eagles' defense did well against the rest of Hamline's squad, as four Pipers hit negative numbers.

Northwestern improves to 9-7 overall with the nonconference win, while Hamline slips to 10-9 on the season. The Eagles will be back in action this weekend, when they head to south-central Minnesota. NWC will face Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minn. on Friday (7 p.m.) before playing Bethany Lutheran College and Gustavus Adolphus College in Mankato, Minn. on Saturday (1 p.m. and 4 p.m.).
