Box Score

ST. PAUL -- Kyle Thomforde (Northfield, Minn./Northfield High School)'s (Northfield, Minn./Northfield) 235 all-purpose yards helped Northwestern College defend its home turf against Macalester College, as the Eagles beat the Scots 31-7 on Saturday afternoon. Thomforde helped pace Northwestern from the get-go, returning the game's opening kick 86 yards for a touchdown.

After Thomforde's initial score, Ryan Long (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) (Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato) added another quick score for the Eagles in their second possession as he capped off a nine-play, 71 yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run. Cody Crum (Rushville, Ill./Rushville Industry)'s (Rushville, Ill./Rushville Industry) PAT-kick made it a 14-0 score in NWC's favor.

Thomforde came up big again in the second quarter, taking a reverse from Zach Tarter (Crystal Falls, Mich./Forest Park High School) (Crystal Falls, Mich./Forest Park) and Rahnee Dennard (Mesa, Ariz./Brophy College Prep) (Mesa, Ariz./Brophy College Prep) 68 yards on Northwestern's first play of the drive for the Eagles' third touchdown of the day. Crum, who made yet another PAT after Thomforde's score, caught a touchdown pass of his own at the 5:42 mark in the second quarter as the junior hauled in an 11-yard pass from Tarter, giving NWC a 28-0 halftime lead.

Macalester scored its only touchdown of the game five minutes into the third quarter on an 11-yard pass from Trevor Miehe to Mike Snavely. Despite matching Northwestern with 18 first downs, the Scots' four turnovers hampered their chances to stay even with their opponents up Snelling Avenue.

A 30-yard field goal with 2:44 to play in the fourth quarter capped NWC's scoring and the Eagles went on to win 31-7.

While Northwestern's offense produced 190 rushing yards and 376 yards overall, it was the Eagles' rushing defense that made a difference, holding the Scots to just 40 yards on the ground. Macalester controlled the football for over 33 minutes while passing for 258 yards.

Tarter was 16-26 for NWC, recording 176 yards and a score through the air. Thomforde was Tarter's favorite target, catching five passes for 62 yards, while Crum and Dan Sunde (Fergus Falls, Minn./Hillcrest Lutheran Academy) added three catches apiece.

The Eagles' Long and Dennard had 61 and 60 yards rushing as the two combined for 23 carries.

Macalester's Miehe completed 25 of his 38 passes in the game. One of the quarterback's interceptions led to an NWC touchdown.
