NWC returns winless from St. Mary's

WINONA, Minn. -- St. Mary's University made the most of its senior night on Tuesday, as they handed the Eagles a 3-1 loss (20-25, 25-16, 25-21, 25-16). Despite winning the match's first set, Northwestern couldn't overcome the Cardinals, who received votes in the latest AVCA/NCAA Division III Top 25 poll.

Chelsea Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) paced the Eagles with 16 kills on 46 attempts while Courtney Jonas (Neenah, Wis./Valley Christian) (Neenah, Wis./Valley Christian) also contributed a great individual performance with 11 kills on 24 attempts. As a team, Northwestern hit .193 in the match, while St. Mary's amassed a .294 attacking percentage throughout the four sets.

Leah Kostek (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian ) (West Des Moines, Minn./Des Moines Christian) and Hillary Slagter (Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) (Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) each had 18 assists for the Eagles. Kelsey Korporal (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredericksburg) (Sumner, Iowa/Sumner-Fredricksburg) paced NWC with 16 digs and Elissa Sandstrom (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) and Sarah Whitmore (Prior Lake, MN/Prior Lake Christian) (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake Christian) each recorded four blocks in the match.

Saint Mary's Sarah Gardner led all players with 18 kills. Jessica Mate added 14 as both posted attacking percentages over .300.

Northwestern, now 15-9 in 2009, will resume its UMAC schedule on Friday, Oct. 23, when the Eagles host Bethany Lutheran College. That match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start in the Ericksen Center.
