Eagles sweep weekend after 62-41 win over Bethany Lutheran

Box Score

ST. PAUL (Jan. 10, 2009) –
Northwestern College made it a perfect 2-0 weekend, keeping their undefeated status in 2009 after a 62-41 victory over Bethany Lutheran College. The Eagles put forth a strong effort in both rebounding and defense, and the shooting took care of itself in the 21-point win.

After Bethany Lutheran maintained a two- to four-point lead early on, Northwestern took over at the 11:41 mark in the first period on a successful three-point shot by Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial). The Eagles progressively built an advantage of their own through the remaining minutes of the first half before going into the locker room with a 37-23 lead.

NWC continued to maintain its large lead in the second half, pushing its advantage to as much as 21 with 6:24 remaining in the game before settling on the 62-41 final.

The Eagles finished 25-of-66 from the floor for 38 percent while nailing half of their 18 attempts from downtown. Marcy Nelson (Sandstone, Minn./East Central) (Sandstone, Minn./East Central) and Luanne Mullet (Lustre, Mont./Lustre Christian) (Lustre, Mont./Lustre Christian) both caught fire from behind the three-point line, as Nelson went 4-of-5 while Mullet made three of her four attempts.

Nelson was Northwestern's points leader with 12, while DeWitt added 10 points. Three more Eagles had at least eight points in the game, including Mullet, who's three three's gave her nine.

Head coach Linda Schuck's team owned the boards, which was evidenced by their 55-37 advantage.

Nicole Jones was Bethany's (6-8, 1-3 UMAC) high scorer with 10 points.

Northwestern improves to 4-10 overall and 3-1 in UMAC action after sweeping Bethany Lutheran and Martin Luther this weekend. The Eagles will have a few days off before playing North Central University in Minneapolis on Wednesday, Jan. 14.  Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
