Volleyball goes 2-0 in UMAC opening weekend

ASHLAND, Wis. (Sep. 27, 2008) – The Northwestern College volleyball team continued their momentum from a three-set sweep on Friday over the College of St. Scholastica, defeating fellow UMAC-foe Northland College in a Saturday matinee (25-14, 25-20, 25-22).  The Eagles received another strong performance from Kathryne Engel (Wayzata, Minn./West Lutheran) (Wayzata, Minn./West Lutheran), who led the team with 14 kills.

NWC has now won seven of its last eight, and is one of three teams in the conference with a 2-0 record after the UMAC's opening weekend.

Engel's personal attacking percentage of .343 throttled an Eagles team that hit .205 overall, while Northland hit .168.  Steph Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) who led the team with 27 digs, continued her stellar all-around game with seven kills and a .312 attacking percentage.

Leah Kostek (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian ) (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) and Hillary Slagter (Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) (Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) combined for 36 assists in the match.

Laura Bicket (Zion, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) (Zion, Ill./Zion-Benton Township), who had six kills herself, was a part of three of the team's six blocks, while Sarah Whitmore (Prior Lake, MN/Prior Lake Christian) (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake Christian had two.

Northwestern (9-4 overall, 2-0 UMAC) will take a couple of days off before hitting the court again on Tuesday, Sep. 30, when they host the University of Wisconsin-Stout in the Ericksen Center.  That match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
