ST. PAUL (Sep. 26, 2008) – Fans in attendance at the Northwestern College versus the University of Minnesota, Morris men's soccer game witnessed a great contest that could have significant value in determining the eventual Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) champion. Both teams battled for a scoreless first half, but it was the Cougars who jumped on the board seven minutes into the second half before leaving Reynolds Field with a 2-0 win.
Dana Veth scored his first goal of the season for Minnesota, Morris, putting a shot past Northwestern goalkeeper
Danny King (Willmar, MN/Willmar High School) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) after a Patrick O'Connor corner kick. Veth's goal at 51:59 was the first for either team.
The Cougars' Matt Johnson tagged on an insurance goal in the 84th minute, scoring on a pass from Toby Glaser to make a 2-0 final.
The game's importance to the players was visible, as fouls and yellow cards showcased the physicality. Northwestern was able to hold Morris' leading scorers in Brent Diggs and O'Connor in check, but Veth and Johnson made their presence known.
King had six saves for the Eagles, who saw their UMAC record fall to 2-1 (3-5-0 overall). Morris becomes the league's only undefeated team at 3-0, and add another game to their current seven-game winning streak.
Northwestern will try to start anew on Saturday, when they host Presentation College at Reynolds Field. That game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
