ST. PAUL (Sep. 16, 2008) – Playing their fifth straight opponent from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC), the Northwestern College men's soccer team has fought hard to represent their own conference (Upper Midwest Athletic Conference). Most of those five games have resulted in strong showings by the Eagles, but, much like Tuesday's game, it was the opponent that claimed victory.
Carleton College, who is currently ranked 21st in the country in the latest NSCAA/Adidas national poll, scored a goal in each of the two periods to preserve their undefeated all-time record over Northwestern. Both of the Knights' goals came on rebounded shots off of the post, and both came off the foot of Brian TenHoor. Bobby Phillips assisted TenHoor's first goal at the 22:37 mark for Carleton, while Brett Adelman was credited with the Knights' second assist.
The Eagles were at odds before the game even started, as Carleton (5-0-1 overall) hasn't lost a regular season game since Sept. 2 of last year. The 2007 MIAC champions have only lost to St. Olaf in last year's conference tournament since then.
Northwestern got six shots off, two of which were from
Jonathan Blatchley (Ham Lake, MN/St. Francis High School) (Ham Lake, Minn./St. Francis).
Danny King (Willmar, MN/Willmar High School) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) made five saves in the game, and didn't have much of an opportunity to block the two Carleton goals after defending the initial shots.
Northwestern (1-4-0) will now turn their attention to the UMAC, as they'll begin league play on Friday, Sept. 19. Last year's conference champions in the College of St. Scholastica await the Eagles, as the two will battle in Duluth, Minn. That game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
