Eagles work hard on Labor Day for 4-2 win over Bethel

Box Score

ST. PAUL (Sep. 1, 2008)
– The Northwestern College men's soccer team made the best of their Labor Day, defeating neighboring Bethel University for the first time in three years. Senior Cal Kanowitz (St. Paul, Minn./Johnson) scored two goals in front of a large and energized crowd, as the Eagles claimed a 4-2 victory.

Northwestern didn't take long to score in their first home game of the 2008 season, as Alex Reyes (Guatemala City/Christian Academy) (Guatemala City, Guatemala) put a 25-yard shot past Bethel's Nick Kantor before three minutes had ticked off the clock. The Eagles added to their early lead with Kanowitz's first goal, which came at the 15:48 mark. Aaron Thelen (Baxter, MN/Brainered High School) (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) recorded an assist on the play.

Bethel responded with a goal of their own not three minutes later, as Zach Hurd (Portage, Mich.) scored on Andreas Scott's (Cedar, Minn.) cross from the right side.

After a much needed halftime for all on a hot-weather day, Scott tied the game for Bethel in the 47th minute. Randon Sommars (Cambridge, Minn.) and Eric Johnson (Excelsior, Minn.) assisted the goal.

Bethel scored the difference-maker at 68:28, but it was unfortunately for the wrong team, as Northwestern went up 3-2 on an own goal. Kanowitz added an insurance goal for NWC with under a minute to play, scoring on an assist for Cory Swenson (Wausau, WI/Northland Lutheran High School) (Wausau, Wis./Northland Lutheran) to make the 4-2 final.

The Eagles tripled Bethel in the shots category, tallying 18 to the Royals' six.

Junior Danny King (Willmar, MN/Willmar High School) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) recorded his first win of the season in the net with two saves. Kantor had four saves for Bethel.

Northwestern will resume their 2008 schedule on Wednesday, when they host Hamline University at Reynolds Field. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
