Eagles Off to a Great UMAC Start With 2 Wins on Saturday

Ashland, Wis., Sept. 29, 2007 – After sweeping the competition in Day 1 of a UMAC cross-over tournament, the Northwestern College volleyball team did the same thing again on Saturday, defeating Presentation and Minnesota-Morris. The Eagles took care of business in three games each match to increase their current winning streak to five.

Presentation, who only had six available players for the weekend, didn't prove too hefty of a challenge for Northwestern, as the Eagles ran away with game scores of 30-17, 30-15, 30-11. The Saints never saw positive numbers in their attacking percentage, netting an equal number of kills and attacking errors. NWC countered with a .342 rate and 49 kills.

To no one's surprise, Kathryne Engel (Wayzata, Minn./West Lutheran) (Wayzata, Minn./West Luthean) and Steph Koth (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) were Northwestern's offensive leaders, recording 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Three Eagles were in double digits for both assists and digs, making the victory a team effort.

Facing slightly more competition in their second match of the day, Northwestern handed UM-Morris losses of 30-18, 30-11 and 30-21.

Engel tied a season-high for kills in a game with 19 on 35 attempts. Elissa Sandstrom (Cloquet, Minn./Carlton) (Cloquet, Minn./Carleton) provided NWC with additional offense, contributing ten kills in the win. In all, the Eagles had 54 kills on the day, while the Cougars countered with 27.

After a runner-up finish in 2007, Northwestern will continue their quest for a UMAC regular-season championship on Thursday, Oct. 4, when they host Northland College in the Ericksen Center. Northland was the only other team to go 4-0 throughout Friday and Saturday, providing evidence for what should be an exciting match. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
