Eagles split twin bill with Northland

Box Score - Game 2

ASHLAND
, Wis. (Apr. 17, 2008) – The Northwestern College softball team made their annual journey to Northland College on Thursday, splitting an afternoon doubleheader with the LumberJills. Northwestern used some extra inning heroics to win the first game before failing to overcome Northland's lead in Game 2.

Northland started things off in the initial contest, scoring a run in the bottom of the second inning on a home run by Karen Harnisch. The Eagles responded in grand fashion, posting four runs in the fifth inning. After hitting a leadoff double to start the inning, Jewel Johnston (San Luis Obispo. Calif./San Luis Obispo) (San Luis Obispo. Calif. / San Luis Obispo) scored on a passed ball. Alyssa Borgstrom (Amery, Wis./Amery) (Amery, Wis. / Amery) and Jenny Kortus (Milaca, Minn./Milaca) (Milaca, Minn./Milaca) followed with RBI hits of their own, making the score 4-1 after four hits in the inning.

The LumberJills made a comeback, tying the game with two runs in the sixth inning on another Harnisch homer, followed by another in the bottom of the seventh. Going into extra innings, Northwestern's Natalie Slagter (Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) (Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) started the inning with a single. After stealing second during the next at-bat, Slagter advanced to third on Amanda Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello)' (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) groundout before scoring on a delayed steal. After Northland failed to get a hit in the bottom half of the inning, Northwestern claimed a 5-4 win.

Kelsey Hanson (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis) pitched all eight innings for the Eagles, yielding seven hits while striking out four LumberJill batters.

Game 2 was a different story for NWC. Even though both teams tallied the same number of hits and runners left on base, the Eagles weren't able to string anything together en route to a 3-2 loss.

Northland (8-13, 5-1 UMAC) scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the second inning, as Asia DeVlaeminck and Alex Potter hit back-to-back doubles. Northwestern responded with a two-run sixth inning courtesy of a costly LumberJills error, but couldn't scratch across a game-tying run.

Rodgers got the nod to start the second game in the pitcher's circle, giving up three earned runs on six hits.

Freshman Jessie Lokken (Goodland, Minn. / Nashwauk-Keewatin) had a great day at the plate, going a combined 4-for-5 with a run scored. Slagter's 17-game hitting streak came to an end after the senior was held without a hit in the second game.

Northwestern (13-9, 5-2 UMAC) will resume action on Friday, when they host Martin Luther at 3 p.m. Bethany Lutheran will follow on Saturday, as they travel to Reynolds Field for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
