Lokken locked in as Eagles sweep Martin Luther

ST. PAUL (Apr. 28, 2008)
– Playing their fifth and sixth straight games in three days, the Northwestern College softball team shrugged off any fatigue they might have had, shutting out Martin Luther College twice. A nasty combination of cold and rain didn't stop the Eagles, as they won 8-0 and 11-0 in two five-inning games.

After chalking up one- and two-run innings throughout the first game, NWC's bench exploded in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Jessie Lokken (Goodland, Minn./Nashwauk-Keewatin) and Kelsey Hanson (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis) (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis High School) hit back-to-back home runs to end the game at 8-0 in their favor. Lokken's homer was a two-run shot, caroming off the top of the left field fence to drive in Jewel Johnston (San Luis Obispo. Calif./San Luis Obispo) (San Luis Obispo. Calif./San Luis Obispo). Hanson, the next batter, took Martin Luther's Heather Korb deep to center, clearing the fence to score the game-winning run. It was the first home run for both Lokken and Hanson in their careers at Northwestern.

Hanson pitched a flawless game from the circle, giving up only one hit while striking out three Knights batters in five innings.

Northwestern continued to pile on the runs in Game 2, starting with a three-run first inning to get the ball rolling. Lokken came up big again, bringing in Lauren August (Maple Plain, Minn./West Lutheran) (Maple Plain, Minn./West Lutheran) and Amanda Rodgers (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) (Monticello, Minn./Monticello) on a two-RBI single.

After scoring three more runs throughout the second and third inning, the Eagles used four hits and two Martin Luther (8-8, 7-7 UMAC) errors to score five runs. Jenny Kortus (Milaca, Minn./Milaca) (Milaca, Minn./Milaca), August, Johnston and Lokken all recorded RBIs in the inning. Rodgers did the rest of the damage on defense, striking out the side in the top of the fifth inning to give NWC an 11-0 victory.

Rodgers gave up two hits in the game, striking out five.

Ashley Weimer (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) (Hill City, Minn./Hill City) started the day on the right foot, going 3-for-3 in the first game while adding an RBI and two runs. The senior walked once in Game 2 while going 0-2 at the plate.

Lokken had her best day as an Eagle thus far, going a combined 5-for-5 at the plate. As if the home run wasn't enough, the freshman added two, three-RBI games with a combined three runs.

Northwestern (15-9, 7-2 UMAC) will play for a fourth straight day on Saturday, welcoming Bethany Lutheran to Reynolds Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
