Women's Hoops Takes Over First Place in UMAC

Win over St. Scholastica propells Eagles to the conference's top spot

DULUTH, Minn. (Feb. 9, 2008) – The Northwestern College women's basketball team climbed to the top of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) standings on Saturday after eking out a 48-46 win at the College of St. Scholastica.  After handing a defeat to Northland College on Friday, the Eagles took sole ownership of the conference's top spot after Minnesota-Morris and Presentation took two losses apiece on the weekend.

 

After shooting 20.7 percent in the first half, the Eagles made over half of their shots in the second 20 minutes to settle for a 34.0 percentage for the game.  The Eagles made 5-of-13 3-pointers in the game for a 38.5 percent mark.

 

Northwestern out-rebounded the taller Saints team by a 38-32 margin.

 

Ariel Liesch (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) led Northwestern with 12 points, followed by 11 by Katie Tuseth (White Bear Lake, MN/White Bear Lake High School) (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake).  Kaelee Kendrick (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) had eight points and a team-high eight rebounds in Northwestern's win.

 

Whitney Latham led St. Scholastica with 12 points.

 

Northwestern (10-12, 8-3 UMAC) will return home for their final three conference games of the season starting next Friday, when they host Bethany Lutheran at 5:30 p.m.  The Vikings will come with a vengeance, hoping to improve their current fifth place position in the UMAC to become eligible for the post-season tournament.
