Eagles win UMAC opener vs. St. Scholastica

DULUTH, Minn. (Dec. 5, 2008) – The Northwestern College women's basketball team began its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) season on the right foot, defeating the College of St. Scholastica 59-38. The Eagles scored 25 points off of 18 St. Scholastica turnovers, helping provide a 21-point final cushion.

Northwestern shot 39 percent from the field while holding the Saints to under 30 percent.

A pair of Eagles in Katie DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) and Kaelee Kendrick (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) (Eagan, Minn./Bethany Academy) paved the way for the victory. DeWitt scored 18 points to go with eight rebounds, while Kendrick added 11 points and five boards. Ariel Liesch (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) chipped in seven points and nine rebounds, seven of which were offensive, in the win.

Kirsten Haukom was St. Scholastica's (1-6 overall, 0-1 UMAC) only player in double figures, scoring 11 points.

Northwestern (2-6 overall, 1-0 UMAC) will hope to carry its momentum into Saturday, when the Eagles play UMAC preseason favorite-Northland College. Tipoff is at 3 p.m. in Ashland, Wis.
