Men's Soccer blanks Bethany Lutheran

MANKATO, Minn. (Oct. 25, 2008) – After earning a 0-0 tie versus Martin Luther College on Friday, the Northwestern College men's soccer team had no problem scoring goals on Saturday, as they left Bethany Lutheran College with a 4-0 win. Two goals in each period and a 26-4 advantage in shots over the host Vikings was the story as the Eagles improved their record to 7-9-2 overall and 6-4-2 in UMAC play.

Matt Olson (St. Paul, Minn./Concordia Academy) (St. Paul, Minn./Concordia Academy) tallied his fifth and sixth goals of the season for Northwestern, while teammates Cal Kanowitz (St. Paul, Minn./Johnson) and Peter Gess (Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson Senior) (Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson) also scored in the game. Olson and Kanowitz's goals came in the game's 17th and 29th minutes. Dan Schumann (Ham Lake, MN/Concordia Academy) (Ham Lake, Minn./Concordia Academy) assisted on Olson's score, while goalkeeper Danny King (Willmar, MN/Willmar High School) (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) recorded an assist on Kanowitz's goal.

Olson scored again at the 66:24 mark in the second half before Gess added an insurance goal in the 81st minute. Ben Haugen (Andover, MN/Meadow Creek High School) (Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek) and Lucas Ausmus (Isanti, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) both assisted on Gess's first goal of the season.

With the win, Northwestern still maintains its 1.5 game lead over Martin Luther for fourth place in the conference standings. The Eagles have two UMAC contests remaining, both of which are against Crown College. NWC will host the Storm on Friday at 3 p.m. before travelling to St. Bonifacius, Minn. for a 2 p.m. bout on Saturday.
