Carleton ends Eagles' 11-match winning streak

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (Oct. 21, 2008) -- After winning 11 consecutive matches, the Northwestern College volleyball team fell to the Knights from Carleton College on Tuesday, 3-1 (25-19, 24-26, 25-19, 25-17).  Carleton, whom the Eagles beat in three sets at the Ericksen Center in mid-September, took advantage of Northwestern's defense, which struggled throughout the entire match.

Kathryne Engel (Wayzata, Minn./West Lutheran) (Wayzata, Minn./West Lutheran) was the only NWC player in double-digits for kills, as she had 13. Engel's attacking percentage, which is usually high, was an example of the team's woes, as those kills came on 44 attempts (.114). Northwestern had a .153 attacking percentage as a whole. Laura Bicket (Zion, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) (Zion, Ill./Zion-Benton Township) added nine kills for the Eagles.

On the other hand, Carleton was led by Kyla Walter and Sarah Halls, both of whom had ten or more kills. Walter was especially dominant; recording kills on 11 of her 15 attempts. As a team, the Knights posted 11 more kills than the Eagles.

Blocking was another area where Carleton held a strong advantage. Annie Eckhoff and Kelly Lovett each had a part in the Knights' 10 blocks. Northwestern was only able to counter with two blocks of their own as a team.

Hillary Slagter (Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) (Prinsburg, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) had 21 assists to lead NWC, followed by Leah Kostek (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian ) (West Des Moines, Iowa/Des Moines Christian), who had 15. Kostek and Sarah Whitmore (Prior Lake, MN/Prior Lake Christian) (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) each had three aces from the serving line.

Following the loss, Northwestern falls to 18-5 (9-0 UMAC). The Eagles, who are 3-4 against MIAC opponents this year, will be ready to resume UMAC play on Thursday, when they host the College of St. Scholastica in Northwestern's Dig Pink event. Northwestern's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be giving away prizes during the match, which includes a pink iPod shuffle. Those who make a $2 donation or more at the match will be eligible for the prize drawings. The SAAC is also promoting a “pink out,” asking everyone who attends to wear pink. The fan that is wearing the craziest pink outfit will also be awarded a prize. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the Ericksen Center.
