Warm-Up For the Dome: Eagles Take It To Trinity Bible

Box Score

Spring Lake Park, Minn., Oct. 20, 2007
– Playing at a neutral location due to an unplayable Reynolds Field didn't cause any problems for the Northwestern College football team, as the Eagles continued their undefeated Upper Midwest Athletic Conference streak with a 65-0 win over Trinity Bible College. Everyone who dressed saw the field for NWC on Saturday, as Northwestern scored nine touchdowns and a field goal to go with 633 total yards in the win.

After a few possession tradeoffs due to early turnovers, the Eagles righted their ship with a four-play, 36-yard touchdown score by Aaron Pennington (Inver Grove Heights, MN/Simley High School) (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley), who caught a pass from quarterback Zack Tarter (Crystal Falls, Mich./Forest Park) with 6:05 remaining in the first quarter. Cody Crum (Rushville, Ill./Rushville Industry)'s (Rushville, Ill./Rushville Industry) successful PAT attempt made it a 7-0 game.

Pennington got the call again early in the second quarter, sparking a four-touchdown second quarter with a one-yard TD run at the 9:58 mark. Jeremy Daggett (Winterset, IA/Winterset High School) (Winterset, Iowa/Winterset) added six more points for the Eagles 86 seconds later, catching a 32-yard pass for Tarter to make it 21-0 in favor of the Eagles.

After Trinity Bible punted on their ensuing possession, Josh Lundeen (Princeton, MN/Faith Christian High School) gave the Eagles a another quick score with an 84-yard reception from Tarter with 3:32 to play in the half. Daggett then ended the half with another eight-yard touchdown reception as time was about to expire, giving Northwestern a 34-0 halftime lead.

The game's second half showcased the rest of Northwestern's offensive players – and some defensive players – as the Eagles went on for five more touchdowns in the second half. After a Steven Boggess (Ginnell, IA/Grinnell High School) (Grinnell, Iowa/Grinnell) three-yard score, Pennington recorded his third touchdown of the day on a 66-yard pass from Tarter.

With a rather large lead, the Eagles looked to linebacker-turned-fullback Max Meagher (Paynesville, MN/Paynesville High School) (Paynesville, Minn./Paynesville), who ran across the goal line for the first score of his career, giving Northwestern a 55-0 advantage. Meagher's score was preceded by a five-yard rush from another unlikely ball carrier in Clint Wolcyn (Cambridge, MN/Cambridge-Isanti) (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti).

Crum, Northwestern's primary place kicker, also got in on the action, kicking a 22-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Dan Hasltensgard (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony) also saw the end zone on a nine-yard rush with 46 seconds remaining to cap off the Eagles' big day.

Trinity's defense couldn't withhold much of Northwestern's running or passing games, as the Eagles rushed for 286 yards, while the air attack amassed 347 yards.

Tarter had one of his best days at Northwestern, completing 15 of his 21 passes for 337 yards and five touchdowns. Lundeen caught four passes for 135 yards and a score, bumping his all-time career receiving yards mark to 2,204.

Pennington's big day included 101 receiving yards, 31 rushing yards and three touchdowns, bringing his season scoring total to 13. Daggett also contributed 52 yards and two touchdowns.

Matt Lowseth (Pinedale, WY/Pinedale) (Pinedale, Wyo./Pinedale) was Northwestern's rushing leader, tallying 107 yards on 12 carries. Boggess had 16 carries on the day for 78 yards and a score.

Meagher and Nate Fehr (Omaha, NE/Millard North High School) (Omaha, Neb./Millard North) led NWC on defense, with each collecting seven tackles, including a one tackle for a loss for both. Andy Magaard (Ogilvie, Minn./Ogilvie) added six tackles.

Eagles cornerback Mike Polley (Plymouth, MN/Wayzata High School) (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) increased his season interception total to six with two picks versus Trinity, adding to his three tackles.

Both Northwestern (6-2 overall, 6-0 UMAC) and Trinity Bible (0-8 overall, 0-6 UMAC) will compete in UMAC Dome Day next Friday, Oct. 26 in the H.H.H. Metrodome in Minneapolis. Dome Day will feature five games, beginning at 8 a.m., with the 8 p.m. game between Northwestern and Rockford College deciding the UMAC Overall Champion. Trinity will face Principia in the 8 a.m. contest.
