Mounds View, Minn., Oct. 20, 2007 – The Northwestern College men's soccer team rebounded nicely after a tough loss to St. Scholastica on Friday, defeating Northland College by a score of 4-0 on Saturday at Mounds View High School. NWC scored all four of their goals in the first half, turning things over to the defense in the second half to preserve the win.
Josiah DeFelice (Temuco, Chile/Xenia Christian High School) (Temuco, Chile/Xenia Christian) scored Northwestern's first goal at the five-minute mark, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Jonathan Blatchley (Ham Lake, MN/St. Francis High School) (Ham Lake, Minn./St. Francis) added the first of three insurance goals not three minutes later, putting a shot past Northland's Matt Fryer to make it 2-0. Blatchley's goal was assisted by Fred Gill (Curtiba, Brazil/Hillcrest Academy) (Curtiba, Brazil/Hillcrest Academy).
Gill followed with a goal of his own in the 16th minute, helping his team make a point that they weren't going away. Aaron Thelen (Baxter, MN/Brainered High School) (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) finished Northwestern's half, and eventually the game's scoring in the 38th minute, giving the Eagles a 4-0 lead that wouldn't be even chipped into.
NWC (7-9-2 overall, 7-5-2 UMAC) owned a huge 25-4 advantage in shots, and had four corner kicks, while the LumberJacks had three.
Everyone on Northwestern's roster who was able saw the field on Saturday in a game that most-likely solidified the Eagles' spot in the UMAC Final Four, which takes place November 2 and 3 in Duluth, Minn.
Next on Northwestern's schedule is a non-conference contest at Carleton College on Wednesday, Oct. 24. Game time in Northfield is scheduled for 4 p.m.
