Max Barthel is beginning his 4th season as a coach for the University of Northwestern Baseball team in 2025. Prior to coaching, Barthel played for the Eagles. Coach Barthel serves as the first base coach for both the varsity and junior varsity teams.
Barthel was a senior on the 2021 squad that became the best team in program history. Barthel helped the Eagles to their first UMAC Championship since 1996 and came within a game of the NCAA DIII College World Series.
In Barthel's first season on the coaching staff, the Eagles repeated as UMAC Regular Season Champions.
Barthel picked up some coaching experience by serving with the Minnesota Blizzard as well as coaching for the Farmington Legion team. Currently, in addition to coaching with Northwestern, Barthel coaches for the Minnesota Icemen.
Coach Barthel currently resides in Shoreview and works for a software company.
