Program History

The first season of Men's Lacrosse at the University of Northwestern took place in 2017 when Joel Friebe was hired to lead the inaugural season. Coach Friebe got the Eagles off to a good start by leading them to five wins in their first season.

Jay Mayes was hired in 2018 and immediately made a splash with UNW Men's Lacrosse. Coach Mayes led the Eagles to 9 wins (which is still a program record for wins in a season) and their first winning season in program history.

In 2019, the Eagles hired their third head coach in as many years, and Travis Sanders was hired and was able to provide some stability for the Eagles' program. Coach Sanders was the head coach for three years and brought the program to new heights as he guided them through their best three year stretch in program history. Coach Sanders has the most career wins in the program's young history, and made history in 2021. In the 2021 season, Coach Sanders led the Eagles to their first conference championship and appeared in the NCAA Division III National Tournament for the first time in program history. By qualifying for the national tournament, UNW became the first Men's Lacrosse team in the state of Minnesota to qualify for the NCAA Division III National Tournament.

In 2022, the Eagles' lacrosse program got a blast from the past. Jay Mayes rejoined the program for his second stint as the head coach. Mayes was named Midwest Lacrosse Conference Coach of the Year in 2024 by his coaching peers.
