Philyaw Ties Program Record, Leads After Day One in Wisconsin

KANSASVILLE, Wis. - The University of Northwestern Women's Golf team is back in Kansasville, Wisconsin to defend its 2025 title at the Midwest Region Classic. The two-day event features 35 NCAA Division III teams from across the Midwest, making up the largest regular season field Northwestern will play in this season. All four Eagles that contributed to the team scores from last year are back in the lineup as they try to repeat as champions, including defending medalist Paige Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool). Follow along with live scoring all weekend here.

Day One

Morgan Philyaw (Jordan, Minn./Jordan), who finished in a tie for fifth last year in this tournament, got off to a scorching-hot start in Friday's opening round. The senior made three birdies on the front nine to come in at 34 (-2), and added two more on the back to finish with an even-par 72, which ties the program record she shares with Johnson. Bri Brandt (Blaine, Minn./Legacy Christian Academy) was the next-lowest Eagle, recovering from a shaky start to make four birdies, including three-in-a-row, on the back nine, to card a 76 (+4) for the day. Johnson turned in an 80 (+8), while Brielle Lenz (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) finished one shot behind the senior with an 81 (+9), making one birdie on each side of the Brighton Dale Links Blue Spruce course. Kylie Voight (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) made her career debut in the starting five, and finished with an 89 (+17).

Of the teams that played in the morning wave (half the field), UNW sits in second place with a team score of 309 (+21), six shots behind Carthage College, the host of the tournament. The other half of the field is teeing off at the time of this posting. Northwestern will conclude play Saturday, with tee times beginning at 8:30 AM.
