Women's Tennis Routs Morris in UMAC Opener

MORRIS, Minn. - Conference season is here for the University of Northwestern Women's Tennis team, and the Eagles kicked it off in style. Traveling to the University of Minnesota Morris for an afternoon matinee, UNW won every match of the day and rolled to a 7-0 win, ending a three-match losing streak.

Already guaranteed a win at No. 3 doubles due to the Cougars not having six players available, Northwestern needed just one more doubles win to take a 1-0 lead. That win came via the No. 1 team of Sarah Langridge (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) and Aby Ross (Chico, Calif./Central), who took down their opponents, 6-2. For good measure, Hannah Hyttsten (Becker, Minn./Becker) and Anne Clarke (Granite Falls, Minn./Yellow Medicine East) won the No. 2 match as well, 6-4.

Singles matches also heavily favored the Eagles, who won all five contested matches in two sets. Hyttsten rolled to a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles, while Rein Hayashi (Kyoto, Japan/Kansai Christian School) (No. 1) and Ross (No. 3) won by matching, 6-1, 6-2 scores. Langridge, who was named UMAC Women's Tennis North Division Athlete of the Week on Tuesday after a 3-0 singles week, stayed hot with a 6-2, 6-3 win in the No. 2 spot. The final win of the day came from Abby Cimenski (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids), who moved up to No. 5 singles and took care of business, 6-3, 6-4. Clarke was credited with a win by default at No. 6 singles, and Cimenski and Macie Ruddy (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) received a win by default at No. 3 doubles as well.

UNW will continue UMAC play Thursday night at home against UW-Superior.
