OWATONNA, Minn. – Intercollegiate Tennis Association's College Tennis Weekend was a successful one for the University of Northwestern Men's Tennis team. The Eagles played some of their best tennis of the year in their final (scheduled) indoor matches of the season, toppling Buena Vista University, 7-0, and Ripon College, 6-1.
Match One: Buena Vista University Beavers
In the morning match, the Eagles set the tone for the day, earning a sweep of Buena Vista. Playing only two players who played in singles matches, UNW won the doubles point by winning two of the three matches. The duo who played in both was
Carson Haack (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) and
Sam Majerus (River Falls, Wis./River Falls), who teamed up for a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles.
Caleb Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) and
Jacob Petrick (Omaha, Neb./Elkhorn North) clinched the point with a 6-0 win in the No. 2 match, while
Caleb Jergenson (Livingston, Mont./Park) and
Briely Gunn (Andover, Minn./Homeschool) suffered a 4-6 defeat at No. 3.
Haack picked up a quick, 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles to finish the match 2-0, while
Griffen Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) earned a 6-2, 6-1 in in the No. 2 match. At No. 3, Majerus bounced back from a tight, 6-7 (3-7) loss in the opening set to force a tiebreak after a 6-2 win in set two. The sophomore came through, winning 10-5 in the extra set to clinch the team win. The No. 4 and 5 singles matches were tight ones as well, as both went to third-set tiebreaks. At No. 5,
Zander Peterson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) escaped with a 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 victory, while
Carsen Kramer (Faribault, Minn/Faribault) held on for a 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 win at No. 4. In the No. 6 match,
Joseph Gallo (Woodbury, Minn./Homeschool) made his collegiate debut and won by default after taking set one, 6-3, and leading set two, 2-1.
Match Two: Ripon College Red Hawks
Northwestern jumped on Ripon from the opening serve, sweeping the doubles matches to secure the first point up for grabs. The No. 1 (Haack and Majerus) and No. 2 (Jarchow and Petrick) teams each won 6-1, while the No. 3 squad of Kramer and
Sam Kettelhut (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) cruised to a 6-0 sweep of its opponent.
Jarchow got singles matches started on the right foot with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2, and Haack followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win in the No. 1 match. Needing just one more point to secure the team win, Kramer delivered, prevailing 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 4 slot. Petrick suffered UNW's only loss of the match, 5-7, 5-7 at No. 3 singles, but Peterson (6-2, 6-0) and Jergenson (6-1, 6-1) came through with big wins at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
