ORLANDO, Fla. – Day two of competition in Florida pitted the University of Northwestern Women's Tennis team against Covenant College (GA) on Tuesday evening. The Eagles were unable to ride the momentum of Monday afternoon's sweep of Oglethorpe, falling 1-6 to the Scots.
Covenant claimed the doubles point with 6-2 wins against UNW's No. 2 (
Aby Ross (Chico, Calif./Central) and
Anne Clarke (Granite Falls, Minn./Yellow Medicine East)) and No. 3 (
Hannah Hyttsten (Becker, Minn./Becker) and
Abby Cimenski (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids)) doubles teams. In the No. 1 match,
Rein Hayashi (Kyoto, Japan/Kansai Christian School) and
Sarah Langridge (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) suffered a 1-6 defeat.
Singles matches brought similar issues for the Eagles, as Clarke lost 0-6, 1-6 at No. 6 and Hayashi fell 1-6, 1-6 in the No. 1 match. Cimenski dropped her No. 5 match by a 2-6, 4-6 score, and Hyttsten lost 3-6, 3-6 at No. 4. Northwestern did see improvement in the No. 2 and No. 3 matches, as Langridge won her No. 2 match, 6-3, 6-2, and Ross battled to a third-set tiebreak in the No. 3 slot, ultimately falling 6-1, 0-6, 6-10.
Northwestern will have Wednesday off before wrapping up its Florida slate at 10:30 AM CT on Thursday against Albion College.
