Women's Tennis Falls to Macalester

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The University of Northwestern Women's Tennis team is coming off its first of the season and was looking to continue with some positive momentum facing Macalester College at Baseline Tennis Center on Saturday. Unfortunately, the Eagles will have to look forward to Florida as they fell 0-7.

Starting with doubles, the No. 1 duo of Sarah Langridge (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) and Rein Hayashi (Kyoto, Japan/Kansai Christian School) fought through its rallies, but fell 3-6. Hannah Hyttsten (Becker, Minn./Becker) and Abby Cimenski (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids), at No. 3 doubles, battled through their set and would end up in a tiebreaker, but also fell 6-7 (3-7). Finishing out the lineup at No. 2 doubles, Aby Ross (Chico, Calif./Central) and Anne Clarke (Granite Falls, Minn./Yellow Medicine East) would see drastic lead changes back and forth to eventually take a 5-4 lead, but luck was not on the Eagles' side as they would lose 5-7.

Heading into singles, at No. 1, Hayashi showed a good fight, but fell 2-6, 0-6. Langridge (No. 2) followed suit in her match as she too would suffer a similar fate with a 3-6, 1-6 loss. Ross (No. 3) went on a roller coaster match. After losing the first set, she would fight back to win the second set in a tiebreaker. The marathon match finally ended as Ross lost 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-10. Hyttsten (No. 4) fell soon after with a score of 0-6, 1-6. At No. 6 singles, Clarke saw a few chances to take the second set, but would also lose her match 4-6, 7-5. Rounding out the lineup, Cimenski also went through a marathon match as neither player wanted to make a mistake in their long rallies. Cimenski clashed head-to-head with her opponent as they went to a ten-point tiebreaker where both players saw chances at 8-8. Unfortunately, Cimenski would fall due to her opponent's net play with a score of 1-6, 7-6 (7-3), 8-10.

Northwestern will take a break this next week in preparation for Florida, where the Eagles will have four matches, starting with a double-header on Monday, March 9th against Cornell and Oglethorpe.
