Box Score 2 MADISON, Wis. – Following what could be a promising start to the 2026 season last week, the University of Northwestern Men's Tennis team was back in Wisconsin to face two more challenging opponents with a few lineup changes from last week. UNW ended up splitting their matchups, winning 5-2 against Edgewood University and losing 1-6 to Loras College.
Match One: Edgewood University Eagles
With a double break of serve by Caleb Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) and Isaac Thomforde (Crookston, Minn./Crookston), No. 3 doubles started off strong, securing a 6-1 win. Carson Haack (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) and Sam Majerus (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) gutted out their match with multiple breaks of serve on both ends, winning 6-3 and securing the doubles point. No. 2 doubles still needed to finish their match, however. Jacob Petrick (Omaha, Neb./Elkhorn North) (Omaha, Neb./Elkhorn North) and Griffen Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) fought back and forth with Loras and ended up having to go to a tiebreaker at 6-6. At 5-5 in the tiebreaker score, they secured a mini break to win their match 7-5, securing a win at all doubles positions and earning freshman Jacob Petrick (Omaha, Neb./Elkhorn North) (Omaha, Neb./Elkhorn North) his first collegiate win and doubles win.
The Eagles kept their momentum pushing into singles with a few changes into the lineup and only four courts to play at a time. Majerus (No. 4) and Jarchow (No. 2) came out firing in their first sets, with Majerus winning his first set 6-2, and Jarchow 6-1. Haack was broken early on his serve and lost his first set of the No. 2 match, 2-6. Majerus continued the momentum in the second set and easily won, 6-0. In Haack's second set, the junior got out to an early break, but it wasn't enough as he lost 2-6, 2-6. Jarchow came back from a 1-4 deficit in the second set to win his match 6-1, 7-5. Freshman Carsen Kramer (Faribault, Minn/Faribault), who moved up to three singles after a breakout win against UW-Stevens Point last weekend, won a thrilling, 7-5, 6-3 match. The rookie broke serve at 30-40, 6-5 due to a double-fault in the first set, and jumped to an early lead in the second to help clinch the overall win against Edgewood. After securing his first doubles win earlier, Petrick earned his first collegiate singles win against Edgewood with a score of 6-3, 1-6, 10-6. At No. 6, Caleb Jergenson (Livingston, Mont./Park) came up short, losing 5-7, 6-2.
Match Two: Loras College Duhawks
Looking to add on to the Eagles' stack of wins in doubles and singles, UNW struggled to match Loras's firepower in doubles. The No. 2 team of Petrick and Jarchow were the first to fall, 2-6, and No. 1 doubles followed soon after with Haack and Majerus losing 1-6 to give the doubles point to the Duhawks. The sophomore duo of Swigart and Thomforde battled at No. 3, but they too quickly fell, 3-6.
Moving to singles, struggles continued onward with Jarchow losing his No. 2 match 2-6, 2-6 and Haack following soon after with a close bout at No. 1, but coming up short at 3-6, 5-7. Majerus took a 1-6, 2-6 loss at No. 4 singles, which secured the win for Loras. There were still matches to be played, and Thomforde wasn't going to allow a sweep. After winning the first set of No. 5 singles, 6-2, Thomforde quickly fell in the second set, 2-6. In the 10-point tiebreaker, the sophomore went down 2-5 before winning seven-straight points to get three match point opportunities and ultimately winning the tiebreaker 10-8. The matches wrapped up with Swigart falling 2-6, 3-6 at No. 6 singles.
