First and Second Place Finishes Headline Women's Track and Field at Hamline Invitational

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The University of Northwestern Women's Track and Field Team had a successful meet at the Hamline Invitational on Saturday afternoon. 

In the field, Emily Ashton (Camas, Wash./St. Mary's Academy) threw another top distance in the Javelin, which won the event. She launched a throw of 36.21 meters, moving to 51st in DIII this season. Ashton also threw the discus a distance of 25.01 meters, placing her 30th. In 22nd place, Grace Mangelsen (Siren, Wis./Siren) threw a personal best distance of 27.96 meters. The lone high jumper for UNW, Naomi Wallace (Pipestone, Minn./Pipestone Area), jumped 1.33 meters for a 12th place finish. In the 1500 meter race, two of the four Northwestern runners paced a new personal record. Emery Maki (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing) led the Eagles' charge and finished 2nd overall with her new record of 4:52.46. Meghan Corbett (Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) followed in 13th place, turning in a time of 5:14.11 for a new personal best as well. Olivia Usselman (Stillwater, Minn./Math and Science Academy) and Alicia Arredondo (Robbinsdale, Minn./Homeschool) finished neck and neck with .03 seconds between them. They were 25th and 26th with times of 5:56.96 and 5:56.99, respectively. In the 800 meter race, Kimberlyn Case (Sleepy Eye, Minn./Litchfield) recorded a personal best time of 2:40.88 for a 24th place finish, while Faith Matvey (Meadowlands, Minn./Lakeview Christian Academy) turned in a season best time of 2:54.07, finishing 29th.

In the 400 meter dash, Wallace finished with a PR of 1:07.18 in 21st place. Along with Wallace, Corbett also took her mark in the 400 and clocked a time of 1:05.61, which placed her 15th. Deanna Ammermann (Spirit Lake, Iowa/Spirit Lake) finished 10th overall with a time of 1:03.92 before racing in the 200 meter dash. In dramatic fashion, Ammermann and Grace Moravchik (Mason, Wis./Ashland) raced each other in the fastest heat of the 200 meter dash and crossed the finish line .001 seconds apart. With Moravchik in lane 2 and Ammermann in lane 7, they battled all the way to the end, where Moravchik took the 5th place finish with an official time of 26.537 and Ammermann took the 6th place finish with a time of 26.538. Alivine Njounang competed as the lone Eagle in the 100 meter dash and finished 19th with a time of 13.33 seconds.

The women's team will compete at the Bethel Invitational on Saturday, April 12.
