Men’s Tennis Falls on Final Day in Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of Northwestern Men's Tennis team played its final match of six in Orlando, Florida on Friday, falling to Ursinus College 0-7.

Doubles started off with a 1-6 loss by Carson Haack (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) and Griffen Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) at No. 1, but Sam Majerus (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) and Isaac Thomforde (Crookston, Minn./Crookston) teamed up for a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles. With the doubles point hanging in the balance, it all came down to the No. 3 match. The Calebs (Jergenson and Swigart) made things interesting, taking their match the distance, but fell 5-7.

Caleb Jergenson (Livingston, Mont./Park) at No. 5 started out the singles competition with a battle, putting up 3 games in the first set and 2 in the second. Thomforde was close behind, finishing with a 0-6, 2-6 result at No. 4. Jarchow was up next, falling 2-6, 1-6 at the No. 2 spot. Majerus at No. 3 kept things interesting, ending with a 3-6 score in both sets. With Ursinus having clinched the match, there was nothing to lose for No. 6 and 1. Caleb Swigart (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) battled back from losing his first set 1-6, to taking the second 6-4 and forcing a third set tiebreak at No. 6 singles. His opponent was able to regain momentum; however, with Swigart falling 4-10. Haack played a similar match, also losing the first set 1-6. His second set was much closer, pushing it to a 7-5 result. In a battle of a tiebreak, Haack was ultimately bested, finishing up the day with a 6-10 result.

The Eagles will travel to Mount Vernon, Iowa next weekend to take on Cornell College and Loras College on Friday, March 21st.
