SUPERIOR, Wis. - The Eagles' Women's Track and Field team traveled up to Superior, Wisconsin for the Maday Classic on Saturday. In their third meet of the Indoor Season, Northwestern saw athletes participate in 14 events as several athletes broke school records, career bests, or season bests.
Racing in the 60 meter dash was Deanna Ammermann (Spirit Lake, Iowa/Spirit Lake). Ammermann qualified for finals with a time of 8.31 in the preliminary race. In the final, she shaved off almost .2 seconds from her time for a season best of 8.15 seconds, finishing 5th in the meet. Ammermann also raced in the 200 meter dash and recorded another season best. She crossed the finish line with 27.68 on the clock, placing 4th.
Grace Moravchik (Mason, Wis./Ashland) competed in the 60 meter hurdles along with the 200 meter hurdles for the first time this season. In the 60 meter hurdles, Moravchik qualified in 3rd place with a time of 9.86 seconds, then turned in a final time of 10.04 for a 4th place finish overall. In the 200 hurdles, she was first to cross the finish at 29.09 seconds.
In the 1000 meter race, Emery Maki (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing), coming off an impressive meet last week where she broke two school records, stayed in form as she completed the race and broke the school record with a clocking of 3:07.90. She broke Claire Sulflow's record time of 3:08.89, set in 2018. Maki now owns the school record in four indoor events at UNW. Her time beat the previous meet record by three seconds as well. Maki also made an appearance in the 3000 meter race, and pushed herself all the way to the first-place finish, stopping the clock at 11:39.16.
Isabelle Yuhanna (Ham Lake, Minn./North Lakes Academy) took home a second-place finish in the 1 mile. Her time of 5:37.95 surpassed the previous meet record time and was fast enough for a personal best as well. The Eagles continued with their personal improvement as Faith Matvey (Meadowlands, Minn./Lakeview Christian Academy) also updated her PR to 2:50.38 in the 800 meter race in her 14th place finish.
Rounding out the running events, Northwestern's 4x400 relay team saw two new members of Alvine Njounang (Virginia, Minn./Grand Rapids) and Naomi Wallace (Pipestone, Minn./Pipestone Area) joining Ammermann and Moravchik. This was Njounang's second 400 meter run of the day. Earlier she notched a season best time of 1:07.33. In the relay, the team ran a time of 4:42.17, finishing 5th.
Wallace and Moravchik were the only two Eagles to compete in field events. In long jump, Wallace recorded a best jump of 4.28 meters (14'). Wallace also competed in the high jump and cleared a height of 1.49 meters (4'10.5" ), which was the highest jump of her career. Moravchik competed in the long jump and tied the school record set in 2010 by Jodi Whitworth. Moravchik jumped 5.12 meters (16'9.75"), which was also further than the meet record.
Northwestern will next compete on Friday, February 21 at the Snowshoe Open at the University of Minnesota.
