ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern Men's Soccer team was finally able to break into the win column on Saturday afternoon, and did so in dominant fashion. Five different Eagles scored goals en route to a 5-0 win over Emmaus Bible College on a picture-perfect afternoon at Reynolds Field.
Northwestern came up empty on four early shots on goal, but
Garrett Miers (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) was able to push one through in the 13
th minute off an assist from
Tim DeLoye (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) and
Simeon Friesen (Mounds View, Minn./Homeschool). Seven minutes later,
Aaron Hill (New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View) did the task himself, scoring an unassisted goal to increase the lead to 2-0. The Eagles were able to tack on one more score before halftime when freshman
Jared Mojardin (Denver, Colo./Northeast Early College) delivered a beautiful cross to his classmate,
Joe Nyagaka (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson), who tapped it in. UNW would go into the break with a commanding, 3-0 lead, having out-shot Emmaus 25-2 in the half and 13-2 on goal.
As dominant as Northwestern was in the first half, you could argue they were even more so in the second. The Eagles out-shot EBC 16-0 and added two more goals for good measure. Junior
Jackson Bauer (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Huntley) netted his first career goal in the 55
th minute (assisted by Nyagaka), then
Spencer Ford (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) did the same in the 75
th off a feed from
Curtis Tinjum (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West). The 5-0 win improved UNW's record to 1-2 on the young season.
In all, Northwestern out-shot Emmaus Bible 41-2 in the match and 21-2 on goal. To Emmaus's goalkeeper's credit, he did make an astounding 16 saves. Mojardin was UNW's leading shot taker with eight, while Friesen and
Joey McMillin (Hugo, Minn./Centennial) put up matching stat lines of four shots and three shots on goal.
Gonzalo Luna Belmonte (Riverbank, Calif./Riverbank) got off three shots, while Nyagaka and
Alejandro Alfaro (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta) each shot twice, both on goal.
Michael Machuca (Rock Island, Ill./Rock Island) enjoyed the sunshine, saving the only two shots he faced.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Eagles, as they are set to travel up north to take on the College of St. Scholastica on Monday, September 9
th. Kickoff in Duluth is slated for 3:00 PM.
