Baseball Drops First Game of Florida Trip

Fort Pierce, Florida –– The University of Northwestern Eagles (2-5) began their Florida trip with a 9-2 loss against Penn State Behrend Lions (5-3).

The Eagles threatened in the top of the first with a two-out single and walk, but they were left stranded. Nick Drinken (Randolph, Minn./Randolph) got the start for the Eagles and retired the first eleven Lions that he faced. Northwestern opened the scoring in the top of the third after Braden Storts (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) and Bryce Crabb (Des Moines, Iowa/Grand View Christian) both reached on one out singles. Grady Karges (Oriska, N.D./Maple Valley) singled them both home to make it 2-0 Eagles.

Penn State got their first base runner in the bottom of the fourth and immediately got their offense going. Back to back singles and a walk loaded the bases for a two-run double before Drinken wiggled out of another bases loaded jam.

Northwestern had a chance to respond with runners on first and second in the top of the fifth, but they were unable to capitalize. The Lions rode that momentum to back-to-back RBI doubles in the bottom of the frame to make it 4-2.

The Eagles again had traffic on the bases in the sixth, as they had the bases loaded with only one-out. Back-to-back strikeouts stranded the runners to keep it 4-2 Penn State.

The Lions scored five runs on five hits in the bottom of the seventh inning, as they broke the game open. Northwestern had runners on first and second in the eighth but could not scratch a run across.

Nick Drinken (Randolph, Minn./Randolph) got the start for the Eagles and threw six innings and gave up four runs while striking out five. Dreyer Homan (Clara City, Minn./MACCRAY) got two outs in the seventh before Alex Luepke (Mankato, Minn./Mankato West) recorded the final four.

Bryce Crabb (Des Moines, Iowa/Grand View Christian) went 2-3 with a run, while Grady Karges (Oriska, N.D./Maple Valley) and Beau Rabey (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) both went 2-4 as the Eagles recorded nine hits.
