ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Northwestern Women's Tennis team returned to action Tuesday after a grueling, two-match Monday in the Florida heat, but any ill-effects were not visible. After going 1-1 on the opening day of competition in the Sunshine State, Northwestern routed Juniata College, 8-1, on Tuesday evening.
By the conclusion of doubles matches, the tone had been set by the purple and gold.
Elise Jarchow (Luverne, Minn./Luverne) and
Analise Marquardt (Parkers Prairie, Minn./Parkers Prairie) were first off the court at #2 doubles after cruising to an 8-1 win. Next was an 8-4 win by the #3 doubles duo of
Abigail Ross (Chico, Calif./Central) and
Madeline Troolin (Cambridge, Minn./Homeschool), then the #1 pairing of
Annie Orvis (Rochester, Minn/Schaeffer Academy) and
Abby Johnson (Zimmerman, Minn./Homeschool) capped off the doubles sweep with a scintillating, 8-7 (7-4) victory to put UNW ahead, 3-0.
Orvis wasn't able to carry the momentum into singles, falling by a 1-6, 0-6 score in the #1 spot, but the rest of
Matt Swigart's crew turned in outstanding performances. Johnson picked up a 6-2, 7-5 win at two singles, then Jarchow (#3), Marquardt (#4), Ross (#5) and
Rayna Baumgarn (Holmen, Wis./Holmen) (#6) all turned in 6-0, 6-0 wins to close out the 8-1 win. To say UNW was locked in would be an understatement.
Northwestern will enjoy a well-deserved day off on Wednesday before looking to carry Tuesday's momentum into a match with Indiana's Anderson University on Thursday. Play is scheduled to begin at 10:30 AM CT (11:30 AM ET) in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
