SUPERIOR, Wis.- The University of Northwestern Women's Track and Field team is competing in the 2024 UMAC Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend and after day one, the Eagles are in the mix for a conference championship.
The Eagles currently have 59 team points which puts them in second place overall in the team standings. Going into the second and final day of competition, the Eagles trail Wisconsin-Superior by 17 points.
Three individual event wins have powered the Eagles to the second place position as a team. The Eagles' 4x200m Relay Team was the story of the afternoon for UNW. Not only did the combination of
Alvine Njounang (Virginia, Minn./Grand Rapids),
Deanna Trucksess (Spirit Lake, Iowa/Spirit Lake),
Holly Rands (Ladysmith, Wis./Ladysmith), and
Grace Moravchik (Mason, Wis./Ashland) win the event at 1:50.06, they also set a new indoor program record. The group broke the previous record of 1:52.79 set in 2015 (Skarin, Moses, Sternitzky, and Doebler).
The 4x200M was not the only win of the day for freshman
Grace Moravchik (Mason, Wis./Ashland). The star Eagle rookie also picked up a conference championship win in the 400M with a time of 1:02.09.
Emery Maki (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing), yet another Eagle freshman, will also stand in the top spot on the podium in Saturday's award ceremony with her performance in the 1 Mile Run. Maki won the event with a time of 5:20.32.
These three individual wins, along with other strong performances from the Eagles, have put the team in a position to compete for the team title on Saturday. Day two of the UMAC Championships will commence on Saturday morning in Superior.
