ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern Women's Soccer team fell to Gustavus Adolphus in their non-conference matchup Wednesday night at Reynolds Field with a score of 0-2.
Gustavus started quickly with a breakaway goal in the 7
th minute. The Eagles nearly responded in the following minutes due to shots on goal by
Naomi Meehan (Waconia, Minn./Homeschool),
Haley Mersberger (Kiel, Wis./Elkhart Lake Glenbeulah), and
Briella Babcock (Byron, Minn./Byron). As the half was winding down,
Samantha Hansen (Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) made several massive saves to keep the Gusties' lead a single goal.
Hansen picked up right where she left off, facing three shots on goal in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Due to the efforts of Hansen, the reigning NCCAA Student-Athlete of the Week, Gustavus finished the night with only two goals while Hanson ended with 10 saves. Though Northwestern was unable to find the back of the net, they dotted the shot chart with 13 shots, 7 of which were on target.
Mersberger led the team in shots and shots on goal with four and two respectively, while
Julia Bradley (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) and Babcock each tallied two shots with one on target.
The Eagles will be back in action at Reynolds Field on Saturday, October 12 at 3:30 PM against Crown, following the Men's game.
