ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Eagles' Women's Soccer team took the field Saturday afternoon in a conference matchup against the Crown College Polars. For the third time in program history, Northwestern and Crown ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
The Polars were quick to net the first goal after only five minutes of play. After the goal, Northwestern tightened up their defense and put on a lot of pressure in the midfield, allowing just five more shot attempts for Crown.
The Eagles stayed on the attack for the rest of the game, firing 21 total shots. While controlling the ball for most of the game, Northwestern was unable to break through until the 82
nd minute.
Briella Babcock (Byron, Minn./Byron) intercepted a pass and quickly dribbled down the sideline searching for an open teammate in the box. Babcock delivered a dime as she crossed the ball to junior striker,
Haley Mersberger (Kiel, Wis./Elkhart Lake Glenbeulah). Mersberger battled through contact and snuck the ball past Crown's goal keeper to tie the game at 1-1.
As the clock wound down, Eagles looked to complete the comeback with a shot on goal in the final seconds, but were spoiled due to Crown's goalie. With the draw, the Eagles remain third in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.
Mersberger finished the game with one goal in four total shots, three of which were on target.
Megan Moeller (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan Christian School) also fired four shots and put three between the pipes.
Mya Chan (Brandon, S.D./Homeschool) led the Eagles with 7 shots, while Babcock added two shots to her assist.
Alix Krueger (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake Area) tallied two shots as well.
Samantha Hansen (Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) finished the game with one save.
Northwestern will challenge the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Wednesday night at 7 PM in Superior, WI.
