ASHLAND, Wis. – The University of Northwestern Men's Soccer team traveled to Ashland, Wisconsin, Tuesday night for their sixth conference game. The Eagles maintained possession throughout most of the game and outshot the Lumberjacks 28-4 and 21-3 on target, but had to settle for a 1-1 draw.
Northwestern got off to a quick start with a beautiful header from the reigning UMAC Player of the Week,
Aaron Hill (New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View). The senior received a perfect cross from sophomore
Gonzalo Luna Belmonte (Riverbank, Calif./Riverbank) in the 12
th minute. The Eagles continued to pepper the goal with shots, but were unable to convert any of those shots to goals.
In the 80
th minute, the Lumberjacks were able to capitalize on a penalty shot even though
Michael Machuca (Rock Island, Ill./Rock Island) correctly guessed the direction of the kick. Northwestern quickly bounced back on the attack and had four great opportunities to score as the clock was winding down. However, the goal keeper from Northland, Rodrigo Chavez, continued to stop shots no matter where they were, finishing with 20 saves on the night. The game would end in a 1-1 tie.
Hill was the only Eagle to find the back of the net, finishing with one goal on three shots with two on target. Luna Belmonte notched the only assist for Northwestern and also added five shots with four on goal.
Julian Ortiz Menjivar (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul) tallied a team-high of six shots with five shots on goal.
Tim DeLoye (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) and
Grant Janowiec (Andover, Minn./Andover) each added three shots on goal, while Machuca faced three shots and came away with two saves in net.
The Eagles will be back in action at Reynolds Field playing a conference match against Crown College on Saturday, October 12 at 1:00 PM.
